7 of the Best Bible Verses for Anxiety

The term anxiety (anxious) appears in the Bible around 17 times depending on the version. The feeling of anxiety can often be a human reaction to stress, fear, guilt, worry, failure, and mistrust. However, anxiety does not come from God. We are all created in His image and God does not get anxious. Anxiety is actually the opposite reaction to God’s will for us. To help with my feelings of stress and worry, I compiled a list of 7 of the best Bible verses for anxiety. These verses provide comfort and reassurance. realize that I don’t need to be anxious because God will always carry my burdens for me. I pray that these Bible verses will help to ease your anxiety.

Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.

1 Peter 5:7

No matter what problems you are dealing with, please know that the Lord loves you and wants to help you. He doesn’t want you to be anxious…ever! He is always waiting for you to ask for help. I always feel so much better after calling upon and entrusting Him with my problems. I hope you will, too.

Pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

I love this Bible verse because it is God’s way of reminding us to always pray even when we are happy. He doesn’t want us to only pray when we are anxious or experiencing hard times. God’s will for us is to pray in good times and bad. We don’t always have to ask for something when we pray. Our prayers can be thanksgiving in nature. Go ahead and thank God for all that He has done for you!

There are many forms of prayer and ways to pray. I would like to introduce you to a particular order of prayer: adoration, supplication, thanksgiving, intercession, and confession. I am a life-long Catholic and this type of prayer serves as a guide for me when I pray. Have you ever felt that you don’t know what to pray or how to pray? Me, me, ME!!! If you are like me, you will find this type of prayer very useful.

Here’s a breakdown:

  • Adoration: Express your love for God. Tell Him how and why you love Him. What has He done for you?
  • Supplication: Talk to God and tell Him how you need Him. Be specific.
  • Thanksgiving: Thank God for his mercy and goodness. Be humble.
  • Intercession: Pray on behalf of someone else. Ask for assistance with certain situations (pandemic, illness, poverty, etc). Ask Jesus, the saints, or angels to pray for you and help you.
  • Confession: Acknowledge your sins and ask for forgiveness. Be honest, humble, and truly sorrowful.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.

Proverbs 3:5-6

A lack of trust in something or someone can create feelings of anxiety. Because of original sin, humans are fallible. God, however, is infallible! It is common to have mistrust in other people because we know that humans make mistakes. What if you placed all of your trust in God? How would you feel? Do think your anxiety and stress will go away knowing that God is going to take away those ill feelings?

Trust in the Lord Proverbs Scripture Print

I admit that I don’t always rely on God first before trying to solve problems myself. You think I would have learned my lesson by now! Our human nature does not automatically turn to an obvious source of strength such as God. The key is to make a DAILY choice to pray and surrender yourself to the Lord. Ask Him for help and He will direct your path toward peace.

The feeling of anxiety can often be a human reaction to stress, fear, guilt, worry, failure, and mistrust. However, anxiety does not come from God.

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Psalm 27:1

The book of Psalms was written by David to the Lord. David openly expressed his love and devotion to God. He always turned to prayer when He faced difficulties. David was the youngest and smallest of his seven brothers, yet he was the only one who did not fear the giant Goliath. David was not afraid or anxious because he KNEW that God is stronger than any giant or anything he may face. David did not fear Goliath because he fully trusted in the Lord.

Can you image the amount of courage that David must have had when He volunteered to slay Goliath? Imagine what it must feel like to wake up everyday without worry, stress, anxiety, guilt, or fear. In fact, those types of feelings are not in God’s will for you! He WANTS you to trust Him totally and completely. A couple of ways to get closer to God and strengthen your faith is through reading the Bible and prayer.

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you.

Matthew 7:7

This Bible verse is one of my favorites. It is short and easy to understand and memorize. Although simple, Matthew 7:7 speaks volumes. The Lord is telling us exactly what we should be doing to live a life of faith, peace, hope, and love! All we have to do is ASK, SEEK, and KNOCK. God’s commands are not complicated but we choose to make them complicated because of our human nature. I’m sure I am not the only person who thinks she can solve problems on her own and doesn’t need help. I can save myself from a lot of stress and anxiety by praying and seeking Him first.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

John 3:16

John 3:16 is a Bible verse that most Christians learned in Sunday School or Vacation Bible School. Just like an earthly Father, God protects and loves us unconditionally. When a child needs advice or is hurting, he goes to his parents. We should view the Lord as our TRUE father. He is always there and made sacrifices for us. Turn to Him, believe in Him, and trust Him. He will get rid of your anxiety and wash away your tears. He promises everlasting life to those who believe in Him; He always keeps His promises.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.

Psalm 23:1-3

In my opinion, Psalm 23:1-3 are the most comforting verses in the Bible. Visions of green pastures and still waters certainly soothes my soul. That type of soothing feeling is what God wants for each and every one of us. He wants us to feel loved and confident in His love for us. The Lord wants to gather you up so that you can rest your head on His shoulders. He, in turn, will lift any burden you are carrying. Imagine all of your worries and anxiety vanishing underneath the still waters.
